Dick's (and Robert Anton Wilson's) short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale", which includes elements of "The Twilight Zone". The town's mayor, played by Cecil Baldwin, was inspired by Orson Welles' performance as the Mayor of Quahog in "The Simpsons" episode "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular". Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor met while working at Maximum Fun! They eventually started writing for the website's series of comedy podcasts, The Black Tapes Podcast. After two seasons on Maximum Fun, they moved their podcast to their own production company, Night Vale Presents.

Cecil Baldwin is a former radio personality and voiceover artist who has voiced radio commercials since 1976. He has appeared in over 100 television commercials, including spots for GEICO, American Express and AT&T Wireless. He also voiced the character Conlan for the video game Saints Row 2.

Jeffrey Cranor was born in Norfolk, Virginia and raised in Salisbury, North Carolina. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Heather Cranor where he works as a writer/director on TV shows such as Archer and Veep. He also hosts a podcast about stand-up comedy called Fighting Words with guest comedians including Jim Gaffigan and Hannibal Buress. The second season of Welcome to Nightvale was released on October 31, 2007 on iTunes featuring new episodes every other week until late November 2007.

The third season began on June 25th 2009 with three new episodes per week until September 22nd 2009 when production was halted due to Jeffrey Cranor being fired from his job at Maximum Fun!. On October 13th 2009 the first six episodes were released for free on iTunes as part of a deal with Night Vale Presents to have episodes temporarily available for free through December 2009. On April 1st 2010 episodes #1 through #6 were made available for sale at $0.99 each via iTunes or Amazon MP3.
